Emergency Contraceptive Pill

What is the emergency contraceptive pill?

The emergency contraceptive pill—also known as emergency hormonal contraception (EHC) or the morning-after pill—is a tablet taken by women to help prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex. This includes situations where no contraception was used or when another method, such as a condom, failed during intercourse.
How does the morning-after pill work?
The morning-after pill works by delaying the release of an egg during ovulation. As it becomes less effective once luteinising hormone (LH) levels are high, it should be taken as soon as possible after unprotected sex. There are two types available: ellaOne, which can be effective later in the cycle, and Levonorgestrel, which is most effective when taken early. Both are best taken on the same day as unprotected intercourse.
Important Information and Possible Side Effects

Common side effects of the morning-after pill may include irregular bleeding, nausea, headaches, and abdominal or period pain. The pill can only be purchased by women, and before it is supplied, you will need to complete a short questionnaire to confirm it is suitable for you. Emergency contraception is available for in-person collection only at our pharmacy.

Protection Against STIs

The morning-after pill helps prevent pregnancy but does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as chlamydia, genital warts, or HIV. To reduce the risk of STIs, it’s important to practise safe sex and use condoms during intercourse, even if you are using other forms of contraception. At Pimhole Pharmacy, we can provide the emergency contraceptive pill following a short, confidential consultation in our private treatment room.
