Over the past 18 months, testing for COVID-19 has become commonplace, but you’re certainly not alone if you have yet to do a test. A lateral flow test is a type of COVID-19 test you can take yourself at work or at home to ensure you aren’t carrying the virus. We offer lateral flow testing kits in Bury to help you go about your daily life safely.

How does a lateral flow test work?

A lateral flow test usually involves taking a swab from the back of the throat and from the nose and then dipping it in a special solution, which is then dripped onto paper to create a reaction. The tests produce results almost immediately, so it’s one of the fastest ways to test for COVID-19.

When do I need to do a lateral flow test?

Your workplace may require you to do a lateral flow test before entering a certain area or working with a certain group of people, but anyone can do a lateral flow test. You can use one if you have come into contact with someone who has COVID symptoms, or before meeting with vulnerable people.

If you are showing symptoms of COVID-19, you’ll need to take a free PCR test. This test detects the virus’ RNA (genetic material) rather than proteins on the surface of the virus, which is what lateral flow tests detect. If you are looking to travel, you will need to purchase a PCR test, which includes a Fit to Fly Certificate, before you jet off. We offer Fit to Fly testing; you can find out more here:

How do I take a lateral flow test?

When you get your lateral flow test, fully read the attached instructions. Some lateral flow tests require only a nose swab, while others require you to swab the back of your throat and then your nose with the same swab, so make sure you know what your test needs. Try to refrain from eating, drinking, smoking, or vaping for around 30 minutes before your test, as this can skew the results of some tests.

When you start your test, do so in a clean area and ensure it cannot be contaminated while you are doing the test. Try to complete the test within 30 minutes of opening the lateral flow test kit.

For complete instructions, see the packaging for your test; further guidance can be found on the NHS site, as well as in the video above.
