Male Hair Loss
What is male hair loss?
Male pattern baldness is a hereditary condition that causes permanent hair loss. It affects around 50% of men over the age of 50 but can also occur in men as early as their 20s.
The condition typically begins with thinning hair at the sides and on the crown of the head, creating the distinct “pattern” that sets it apart from other types of hair loss.
While male pattern baldness is not harmful and does not require treatment for health reasons, it is permanent and can be emotionally challenging, impacting confidence and self-esteem. Fortunately, there are treatments available that can help slow hair loss and, in some cases, promote new hair growth.
Other Causes of Hair Loss
It’s completely normal to shed 50–100 hairs a day without noticing, and in most cases, hair loss is not a cause for concern. However, it can sometimes be linked to an underlying medical reason, such as:
- Certain medications or treatments, including chemotherapy
- Stress
- Significant weight loss
- Iron deficiency
- Illness
- Skin conditions like alopecia
What treatments are available for male hair loss?
There are several treatment options available for men with male pattern baldness, though it may take several months to see noticeable results:
- Topical medication – creams or solutions applied directly to thinning areas
- Oral medication – daily tablets that help slow down hair loss
- Light therapy – laser treatments aimed at stimulating hair follicles
- Hair transplant – a surgical procedure that moves healthy hair to thinning areas
Side Effects and Consultation for Hair Loss Treatment
Like all medicines, hair loss treatments can cause side effects. For men taking Finasteride, these are uncommon and usually mild, including rash, low mood, reduced sex drive, and occasional erection problems. If you have any concerns about side effects, speak with your GP or pharmacist. At Pimhole Pharmacy, our pharmacist can discuss the available treatment options with you and help choose the most suitable approach for your needs.
