COVID-19 Antibody Test

What does the test look for?

An antibody test checks your body’s immune response to an infection – in this case, the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19. When your body combats an infection, it produces various types of immune responses. Some act quickly to fight the virus, while others provide longer-term protection against future infections. This test detects two specific antibodies: IgM and IgG. Typically, IgM antibodies develop around one week after infection, while IgG antibodies appear after approximately two weeks. As these antibodies take time to form, it is advisable to wait a few weeks after infection before taking the test to ensure accurate results.
COVID-19 Antibody Testing

'We offer a COVID-19 antibody test. The MHRA-approved COVID-19 antibody test has a 98.69% detection rate, carried out in-store with results available in just ten minutes. If you believe you have had COVID-19, please wait at least 21 days after recovery – or 28 days if you’ve been in contact with someone showing symptoms – before taking the test. To book your appointment, please call our pharmacy.'

Important COVID-19 Safety Notice

If you have a high temperature, a new continuous cough, or a loss or change in your sense of smell or taste, please do not visit the pharmacy. Stay at home and, if your symptoms do not improve, contact NHS 111 for further advice on what to do.

How reliable is the test?

The test kit we use is highly reliable and is the same type used by the NHS in hospitals. While all blood tests carry a small risk of false-positive or false-negative results, such cases are very rare.

A false-positive occurs when the test incorrectly detects antibodies, whereas a false-negative means antibodies present in your blood are not identified. The most common reason for inaccurate results is taking the test too soon after infection.

For the most accurate results, please wait at least 21 days after recovering from a possible infection, or 28 days after contact with someone showing COVID-19 symptoms, before taking the test.
