What is Hypertension/Blood Pressure?
Do you know what your blood pressure is?
If you don’t, you’re not alone — high blood pressure, also known as hypertension, often goes undiagnosed. According to NHS figures, nearly one-third of adults in the UK may be living with high blood pressure without realising it.
Fact: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) refers to any condition affecting the heart or blood vessels, including coronary heart disease, angina, heart attacks, high blood pressure, stroke, and many others. CVD remains one of the leading causes of death in England, with high blood pressure being the biggest contributing factor. Around seven million people in the UK are affected by cardiovascular disease, yet Public Health England estimates that only about 60% of cases have been diagnosed.

Will I be started on blood pressure tablets?
You will only be started on blood pressure medication if your readings remain high and your healthcare professional determines it is necessary.
- A single high reading does not usually mean you will be given medication.
- Your pharmacist or GP may ask for repeat readings or home monitoring first.
- Lifestyle changes are often recommended before starting tablets.
- Medication is only prescribed if your blood pressure remains high over time.
- Regular follow-ups will be arranged to monitor your progress and adjust treatment if required.
